The FINANCIAL — Brunei-based Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam will deploy the latest biometric ATM technology and software from Wincor Nixdorf, a global provider of innovative IT solutions and services to retail banks and retailers, to improve customer service across its branch network.
The Islamic financial institution in the sultanate in Southeast Asia, which has a population of approximately 400,000, is the first bank in Brunei to introduce biometric-enabled ATMs from the Germany-based technology provider. Wincor Nixdorf has successfully installed similar systems across Asia Pacific, including India and Cambodia. The bank launched the country's first biometric ATM at the TechXpo 2011 trade and consumer expo in Brunei, with the country's Minister of Communications Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdullah attending the launch.
The seven ProCash 8000 biometric-enabled ATMs will be deployed in November and are the first Wincor Nixdorf systems to be introduced in the country. BIBD operates 15 bank branches in Brunei.
In order to ensure the new systems are available around the clock as well as its existing ATM installed base, BIBD has adopted Wincor Nixdorf's ProView software. The software is multi-vendor enabled, meaning that it monitors all the systems in the network regardless of the ATM manufacturer.
The software will monitor the entire ATM network primarily to minimise downtime from technical glitches as well as to proactively prevent fraud, such as skimming, at the ATM.
