5 Tips For Starting University

Whether you are planning on studying a course such as an MBA at RMIT Online, or you want to do a taught degree in a university, there are some things that you need to do in order to prepare yourself for student life.

Studying often means moving away from home, and even if you don’t need to move away there will be considerable disruption to your life.

In this article, we’ll talk you through some of the top tips for making the change to university life as smooth as possible.

Arrange Your Student Accommodation Early

If you need to find somewhere new to live while you are studying, then you may well consider staying at designated student accommodation. Student accommodation is often reasonably priced and well-situated close to campus.

Once you know that you will be studying at a particular university, then you should start looking into where you will be living. Student accommodation may fill up quickly so you should get in there early and book your place.

Learn To Cook

If you are moving away to university, you may need to fend for yourself for the first time in your life. This means cooking. Before you head off to university, take the time to learn how to cook. Ask family members if they can teach you how to cook any family favourite meals before you go. That way, you’ll be able to enjoy home-cooked meals while you are away.

This will save you money and be healthier for you than living off takeaways as you might do otherwise.

Connect With Course Mates Before The Start Of Your Course

These days, you can start to meet your fellow students before day one of your course. With Facebook and Watsapp groups for new students to get to know each other before the start of the term, this is a great way of networking and finding some friends before your course starts and it will make the process of meeting new people a little bit less daunting.

Budget Well

When you get your first student loan instalment, it can be very overwhelming. You may not have had so much money all at once and the temptation may be to go and blow it all on a shopping trip. You need to make sure that you take control of your spending and budget well to make sure your student loan lasts the full term. Remember, your student loan needs to pay for your accommodation, your food throughout the term, and for your course materials. Anything else is a luxury and should be treated as such.

Start Your Reading Early

Get a head start on your reading list by starting it early. You will have a lot to get through over the course of the year, and the earlier you make a start on your reading the better. Get into good habits from the outset and you’ll find yourself in good stead when your schedule becomes more stressful.
